The Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) Thunder Bay is presenting its annual Persons Day breakfast to be held October 30, 2019 at the Finlandia Club, 314 Bay Street, with doors opening at 7:30 a.m. World famous Hoito pancakes will be served, with coffee sponsored by St. Paul Roastery. This event is a fundraiser, with proceeds going to the LEAF National, and its local in Thunder Bay.
Persons Day is an annual celebration in Canada, held on October 18. The day commemorates the case of Edwards v. Canada (Attorney General), more commonly known as The Persons Case – a famous Canadian constitutional case decided on October 18, 1929, by the Judicial Committee of the Imperial Privy Council, which at that time was the court of last resort for Canada. The Persons Case held that the word “person” would include women, and they were eligible to sit in the Senate of Canada.
The Keynote Speakers will be: Rosel Kim, LEAF National Staff Lawyer who will provide an update on LEAF’s 2018/2019 progress, and Dr. Mariette Brennan who will discuss Section 28 of the Charter, and Quebec’s Secularism Bill.
OA is proud of our Associate lawyers who are involved with this organization – Elizabeth (Liz) McLeod is a Board member of LEAF; Hayley Yorke is the Founding Membership Coordinator.
Tickets are available at Eventbrite.ca, with General Admission at $50/person; Student Admission at $25/person. If you cannot attend but would like to support LEAF, donations can be made. If you make a donation of $500, you will receive a marketing package/table sponsorship.
